The Winter Gala, A Night To Remember

The Winter Gala was a huge success. The event occurs yearly and is open to all grades and their families. It was a formal event with entrance attendants, baristas, countless waiters, food, and drinks. For food, there were five tables full of incredibly delectable dishes, mock cocktails on the side, and a large pastry table, all crafted by Howe Sound’s Culinary students. Raffles and bidding tables were available during the dinner to support the music program and the Leadership teams. Later, Howe Sound Secondary’s band played beautiful festive songs and performed special solos. It was a memorable night for everyone and “worth much more than the entrance fee,” said a parent.

Winter Surprise from Santa!

Each year before winter break, the Winter Assembly is held in the gym at Howe Sound Secondary. It includes Christmas games and celebrations, such as "Do You Know Who" in the form of a Kahoot. Later, the Student Leadership pies a teacher who has received the most donations. Then they hand out gag gifts from Santa to specific students to cheers and laughter. There was singing from Santa, a dance performance from the Howe Sound Dance team, and a special performance by the teachers. A huge thanks to Student Leadership for organizing this festive event, and to all the other volunteers. Happy Holidays!

Perspectives On the Student Phone Policy

British Columbia's new provincial mandate requires all school districts to adhere to the new code of conduct regarding personal digital devices. A student at Howe Sound Secondary seeking student reflection on the matter conducted research by gathering a focus group. The focus group completed a survey and answered numerous detailed questions. The data indicates that students either find the policy "annoying [and] doesn't work" or it does not bother them. The focus group noted that most students prefer to listen to music and have access to their personal devices. Also, they felt that their productivity decreased due to the restrictions. Only 20% of students mentioned appreciating the phone policy because it improved their classmates' behaviour during lessons.
